Are ELA and Math integrated into the OpenSciEd Units?

The goal of integrating ELA with OpenSciEd units is to use literacy practices of reading, writing, and communication to develop and reinforce important science ideas and practices, while supporting students in strengthening their ELA practices and demonstrating the importance of ELA practices for science.

The goal of integrating mathematics into OpenSciEd units is to use mathematical understandingand practices to develop and reinforce important science ideas and practices, while supportingstudents in strengthening their math understanding and practices, and demonstrating theimportance of mathematical thinking and practices to science. Alignment with CCSS-Math standards was used to help develop the three year scope and sequence used in OpenSciEd. We considered the type of mathematics needed to build, investigate, and refine each of the target DCIs and engage in the SEPs, and placed units so that the necessary mathematics would be available at that grade (e.g., ensuring that force and motion, which requires non-linear relationships in data, occur at 8th grade, when these mathematical ideas and practices are targeted).
