OpenSciEd
Transformational professional learning for equitable science classrooms
Yes, we are certified to provide our own professional learning. Crazy, right?
We just want to make sure that people know that you can directly request professional learning from us, in addition to reaching out to any of the other fantastic professional learning organizations that we have certified.
At OpenSciEd, we believe in the power of students to learn and the power of teachers to be innovative and creative in the classroom. We are committed to disrupting a status quo that includes inequitable instructional materials and a lack of professional learning for science teachers. Our instructional materials are independently evaluated to be among the best units designed for the NGSS and our professional learning is equally transformative. Our hope is, by making our instructional materials free and publicly available, districts can afford great professional learning, resulting in equitable science classrooms that unleash the power of teachers and students.
These are our materials, so this is all the professional learning we do. We are committed to finding creative ways to support as many teachers, schools, districts, and communities as possible to maximize the impact of our classroom materials. If you’re looking for services beyond direct support of OpenSciEd implementation, we recommend you connect with our certified organizations.
OpenSciEd materials guide teachers in implementing equitable science instruction for all students, with particular attention to student groups who have historically been under served in science. Equitable instructional practices are central to the material’s design, not add-on strategies that need to be deployed in the presence of certain students. By design, these materials relate to the interests, identities, and experiences of students and the goals and needs of their communities. Professional learning participants not only experience this learning as students, but learn how and why they were made the way that they were so they can create equitable science classrooms.
Implementing instructional materials that demand a paradigm shift in instruction for teachers is a multi-year effort. We partner closely with districts to develop a plan that works within their systems, but leverages the richness of this professional learning to make a difference for teachers, students, and families in your community. Whether materials are implemented in a unit-replacement strategy, or all in one year, OpenSciEd has the equivalent of 14 days of professional learning to support implementation that can be spread out over the course of implementation and we can work together with your team to customize this support to meet your needs.
