Activate Learning supports educators by providing multiple opportunities to experience three-dimensional curriculum and instruction, to understand how the curriculum design works, and to analyze an array of instructional practices that foster meaningful student engagement with science. Activate Learning Professional Learning fuels the passion of teachers. Educators are actively guiding students through rigorous science investigations. Our comprehensive professional learning resources provide the necessary content, structure, and support to experience three-dimensional teaching and learning.
Focus of OpenSciEd Work
Our professional learning opportunities are structured around the following categories to support the goals for teacher and student learning. Teachers will come away with the following skills to be successful at:

Supporting Equitable Science Instruction
Successful teacher professional learning creates an environment where all students have opportunities to:
- Apply their learning authentically
- Gather evidence to support their sense-making about the world around them
- Engage like scientists by recording their learning
- Receive and respond to teacher feedback in real-time
- Monitor their own progress
- Make their thinking visible through Driving Question Boards, interactive Word Walls, and productive discussions
- Represent their ideas as models, and annotate and highlight text
- Respond to questions using scaffolded supports like sentence starters and read-aloud features when needed
- Review and revise their ideas and thinking to support claims with evidence
- Demonstrate their understanding through authentic assessment tasks
Supporting School Systems
Activate Learning has a rich history of providing professional learning across the country for over 10 years. Our team of expert facilitators provide the learning experiences for teachers to be successful in three-dimensional teaching and learning. The professional learning sessions include educative elements embedded within the curriculum and created to guide the development of a set of OpenSciEd resources that offer a coherent and ongoing system of support. The sessions are designed to prepare teachers with the practical elements of enacting a curriculum for the first time and provide a vision for the long-term goals of the OpenSciEd Project and the implementation of A Framework for K–12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
