Wade Institute for Science Education

Inquiry-based, hands-on, minds-on, STEM professional development for K-12 teachers and informal educators.

Wade Institute for Science Education programs tap the expertise of educators and scientists from research, cultural and educational organizations, and colleges and universities to model inquiry-based science, engineering and technology curriculums. To be able to successfully teach inquiry-based science, teachers need to be immersed in model programs as both ā€œstudentsā€ themselves and educators. Our programs include both teaching strategies and science content. By participating in Wade Institute programs teachers learn how to develop and implement hands-on, minds-on inquiry-based curriculum.

The Wade Institute for Science Education offers professional learning support for inquiry and phenomena based instruction that is fully aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards. We offer both fee-based professional learning workshops for individuals as well as customized professional learning services for schools and school districts, in both in-person and virtual instruction models. In the Wade Instituteā€™s OpenSciEd professional learning teachers and adminstrators will gain facility with the implementation of OpenSciEd in the classroom, with both science and pedagogical support provided by trained educators and science partners. We can help you learn the ins and outs of the OpenSciEd model, as you launch existing OpenSciEd curriculum units, provide on-going support for implementing the OpenSciEd units or help you adapt your existing units to the OpenSciEd model.

The Wade Institute for Science Education believes that all students deserve high quality science instruction. We acknowledge the vast social and structural inequities that create barriers to equitable opportunities in education and career development, and we recognize that students and teachers bring many identities that impact their access to science learning. In accordance with our mission, we seek to provide high quality professional learning experiences for all Science, Technology, and Engineering educators to promote and enable their efforts to create equitable, inclusive, and accessible STEM learning experiences for their students in Massachusetts and across the nation. We strive to equip K-12 teachers and informal educators with resources and instructional practices aimed at supporting them in creating equitable and inclusive learning experiences in their classrooms, programs, and institutions and that support their growth in understanding the diverse identities, needs, assets, and challenges of their learners.

The Wade Instituteā€™s Customized Professional Learning Services are designed to help support school systems by providing experiences tailored to each school or district we work with. We offer Professional Learning programs that build on each other through multiple yearly contact points, including Professional Learning sessions and individual or small group coaching sessions. We incorporate opportunities to apply Professional Learning directly to the classroom and use reflection and evaluation to improve outcomes for students. We can provide support to school leadership and administration as they navigate what an OpenSciEd classroom looks like, including helping teachers and administrators identify and implement OpenSciEd aligned formative and summative assessment.
